EASTER FEAST WINE PAIRING
Your meal-plan for Easter is set, but you are not sure what wine you should serve with it? Let´s try to get you some ideas and suggestions…
Lamb
Are you serving a rack of lamb, lamb roast or leg of lamb, red wine would be your best “company”. The more spicy and flavourful your meal is cooked, the spicier and stronger your red wine can be.
We suggest either a Bordeaux red (e.g. Château Villa Bel-Air or Michel Lynch Bordeaux Rouge) or a full-bodied, fruit-forward Syrah/Shiraz (e.g. Vidal Reserve Gimblett Gravels Syrah Hawkes Bay or Mad Fish Shiraz).
Salmon
If you are preparing a nice salmon for your Easter lunch or dinner, we suggest medium to full-bodied whites or red wines with light tannins.
Salmon is a rich and fatty fish, so a safe choice would be a Chardonnay (e.g. Villa Maria Private Bin East Coast Chardonnay or Veramonte Reserve Chardonnay).
If you prepare your salmon more in a “steak-style”, we would recommend a nice Pinot Noir (e.g. Villa Maria Private Bin Pinot Noir or Casa Silva Cool Coast Pinot Noir). Those would also go well with Cod.
Poultry
If your meal of choice is chicken or turkey what, became very popular for Easter, we suggest either a Chardonnay (e.g. Jean Balmont Chardonnay) which the oakier it is, the more enhanced the sweet flavour of our poultry will be.
Or go with a nice pink rosé wine (e.g. Toma Tempranillo Rosado or Villa Maria Sauvignon Blush) which will provide the right touch of springtime lightness and energy.
Easter Ham
With a slightly sweet, but salty flavour, ham deserves a wine that will curb its tang without overpowering its richness.
We have two suggestions that go beautifully with ham: Riesling (e.g. Preiss-Zimmer Riesling or Esk Valley Marlborough Riesling) what most of the time offers ripe, crisp flavours and aromas that never try to overpower the importance of the ham.
Or try a Gewürztraminer (e.g. Preiss-Zimmer Gewürztraminer), if your ham is more on the spicier site. The Gewürztraminer will help to balance here.
We hope our suggestions have helped in your Easter food & wine preparations.
Happy Easter, Cheers!
